The IIRSM Middle East Branch held its 9th Members meeting on the 24th January at International HSE Council’s centre in Jebel Ali.
Current members, new members and future members attending were welcomed by Chairman, Kyle Bennie.
Dr Amit (IIRSM ME Treasurer) then conducted a presentation on the “Management of contractors and temporary staff”, which generated a lively discussion involving all present.
During the introduction of the topic, Dr Amit informed the group that the IIRSM UK team had recently released a technical paper on the topic of “Ensuring Competence in the Selection and Management of Contractors and Temporary Workers”. A copy can be downloaded from www.iirsm.org Dr Amit’s presentation provided a platform for HSE professionals to consider ways of improving the selection and management of contractors and temporary workers in the Middle East. The discussion was high in velocity with positive input from all HSE professionals working in different sectors. Some but not all of the topics discussed were; unscrupulous contractors, contractors failing to meet basic safety requirements, performing tasks that are negligent towards safety, pre contractor evaluation, HSE legislation in the Middle East, HSE training, possibility of HSE ‘passport’ scheme within the Middle East and much more.
The Branch meeting also included a new topic of ‘Get to know your Branch’ with Chairman Kyle Bennie presenting an overview of his organization – P&O Maritime and his day to day activities.
As always the meeting ended with questions and recap summary before networking opportunities.
